October 23rd was Scattergood Day, an opportunity for friends and family to visit Scattergood school. There were parent-teacher conferences, school tours, group meals and time to meet other parents and students.
Brian is now in his second year at Scattergood as a Sophomore. The faculty uniformly agree that he is showing real improvement this year. Besides showing improvement in his skills, he is showing a real interest in class, and is now more actively asking questions. He is demonstrating that he recognizes the importance of making the most of his education.

Our club can be proud of its support of Brian. Besides learning that takes place in the classroom, Brian is also learning from his involvement with Kiwanis. He already participated in the Key Leader program last year, and will attend again this year. He is the Charter President for the new Scattergood Key Club. The skills he learns in his time at Scattergood and through Kiwanis are preparing him to be able to make a real contribution both here and to the greater world.
Byron and Julie Tabor were in attendance along with two other “Team Brian” members, Linda Greenburg, and John Taylor.
Linda Greenberg (at far right in the Team Brian photo) was the person responsible for bringing Brian to the US. She is just a private citizen who met Brian during multiple ecotourism visits to Uganda and the Mountain Gorillas. While there she became committed to also helping the people of the region. It was her initiative to find partners in this project that led her to contact Byron, and the Kiwanis Uganda Kids Project was born. She recently moved to Florida, and brought sweatshirts for the whole Team (see GoGaters photo).

John Taylor (third from the right in the Team Brian photo) is another key part of Brian’s success. He also knew Brian from travels to Uganda. In John’s business position with Wellspring Advisors, LLC he coordinates grant making programs to advance the realization of human rights and social and economic justice for all people. He has been invaluable with his knowledge and assistance with Brian’s travel and passport arrangements.
Our club is fortunate to have this opportunity to help such a deserving young person. Here is where we can directly see that we, as Kiwanians, are changing the world one child, and one community at a time.
