Brian from Uganda on his way to Scattergood.I have a great project for your club.

On June 15th of this year I was contacted by Linda Greenberg from Annapolis, Md. She works with a homeless charity ( http://www.homelessdrive.com/ ) and a Uganda charity ( http://www.4uganda.org/ ). She has arranged for two kids from Uganda to be accepted to the Scattergood Friends School ( http://www.scattergood.org/ ) in West Branch, IA beginning with the next school year. She has worked with Kiwanis Clubs in the past and contacted me as a current Lt Governor and President of my club. She is working with the local Rotary club in Uganda to help the kids get ready.

Brian from UgandaBrian is a 16 year old boy abandoned by his father and Fortunate is a 15 year old girl. A Kiwanian travel agent estimates $2500 per each child for travel expenses to Iowa. Iowa’s Scattergood Friends School has generously offered scholarships to allow each of them to attend for $2365 per child instead of the normal $20,000 per year. Since it is a boarding school, the tuition includes room and board. Linda thinks an additional $600 per child will cover the rest of their expenses for the year.

Right now these kids have nothing. They wear clothes that are left by the tourists that come to see the silverback gorillas that live near them. Yet Brian has started a “kindness club” where once a month they get together and do something nice for a needy person. Linda said their last project was helping a woman in her 80’s. She lives in a rundown shack that is miles from the nearest water. They carried water to her and helped fix up the shack.

I told Linda that I would try to help her get the kids here and pay for their education. This is a big challenge, but could be an extremely rewarding project for all involved. I need to raise $5000 before August 22 for their travel costs and $4750 for tuition for the first year. I don’t know yet the specific date that the tuition will be due. The extra $1200 for living expenses will probably be needed soon after their arrival as well.

This is my plan:

  1. Find 25 clubs or individuals that would be willing to donate $200 before August 22nd. This should cover travel expenses in time to get them here for the start of the school year.
  2. Find 30 clubs or individuals that would pledge $200 per year beginning now and commit to a total of 4 years to cover their tuition. The Hiawatha-CREW Kiwanis club and Marion Metro clubs have already pledged $200/year so, technically, I only need 28 more.

These kids deserve our help. They have the potential to become adults who can help their country balance the needs of the people and the needs of the beautiful animals that surround them.

If you or your club would like to help please contact me soon. I must have a majority of the funding in place by the end of July. Donations/pledges of any amounts will be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you for your consideration.

Re: From Uganda to Iowa - a Project for Kiwanis Clubs

Here is the email that Brian sent us about his first downhill ski trip. This is a riot. :-)Good morning,I went downhill skiing yesterday with some of the other students from school. It was a snow day so we had no classes. Oh My God it was crazy because I have never skied. well I didn't know that if you are a beginner you take lessons first. I just followed the other kids who knew how to Ski. I skied on the beginners hill and I skied to the bottom but I failed to stop because i did not know how to. it was funny because i just figured out to stop and i did not fall down. The other turn, I went to the other hill which was a bit crazy, I skied to the bottom without falling down but I was skiing on a very high and crazy speed because i did not know how to reduce on my skiing speed. I realized that I was supposed to take a lesson otherwise it was not good for me to ski without taking a lesson. Haha this is funny, we used lift to go back at the top of the hill, so when I reached there, my schoolmates told me that I should follow them, we skied and when I reached in the middle of the hill, I fell down, one of my skis went off and it started sliding, i slided down and caught it, putting it on was a problem. I spent like 5minutes trying to put it on but i failed because the hill was steep. One of the people I don't know helped me and when I started skiing again, I saw where I was going, God it was crazy, I saw I had no choice because I couldn't climb up, so I just skied down to the bottom and finally made it. But I went to take a lesson after that. The lesson helped me because I caught up and skied like some one who have been skiing for couple of years. After Lunch we went to ski again and I started skiing to the crazy horse hills. After that one of the kids convinced me to go to the war path which is for experts only. I was like well I am not going there. I skied to the rest of the hills but not war path though I was falling down a little bit. I was surprised towards evening time, I was like let me ski for my last turn, I skied and forgot where the war path is. I finally found my self skiing there and I almost cried because I was scared. it was steep almost like a wall, I skied safely to the bottom, I went back to the top of the hills and the other kids told me that we should ski down without shirts for our last turn for the rest of the day, I didn't make it because because I was a little bit crazy because of skiing to the war path, The other kids made it without shirts on and they came back while freezing. I had a fun day Yesterday and I loved skiing. I can't wait for my X-C ski trip this weekend. Thanks Brian.

Re: From Uganda to Iowa - a Project for Kiwanis Clubs

Brian was very brave and endured his first trip to the dentist EVER. He had a couple of small cavities that were filled last Thursday. He wondered if his cheeks looked as puffy as they felt.

A big thanks goes to Dr. John McGrane at Spring Valley Dental on Center Point Road. He did a great job of making the experience as quick and painless as possible. He said Brian was braver than half his adult patients.

John and I grew up together in Independence and donated his services. Thanks John!
